At Long Last
About five years ago, I made a (very) short movie. It was based on an utterly spontaneous and sprawling conversation I had while visiting some friends in August of 1998. In a sense, I never returned from the visit. This movie was built on an engine called 16-Color, served by 16-Color.com. (The website does an excellent job, telling it's own story in a remarkably short amount of time.)

I never had the chance to see what that guy did with the DVD. Visually, I am certain that the movie's framerate is much better and--as a result--the animation looks smoother. Musically, I'm sure it's not to my liking.

Because of the soundtrack, which is by Mr. Shockabilly, himself, Link Wray (1929-2005), and in spite of the poor video quality, I consider the following edition to be definitive.

La Balayeuse!

I'm pretty sure I don't get it, but I like it! It has a certain je ne sais quoi ....

In retrospect, I think I could've come up with something better than "très beau", but I think it works.

I've watched it a few more times and I'm getting it. I think. I do know that the music seems to fit perfectly!

How do you translate "The Anti-Drug is Death?"

L'anti-drogue est la mort.

I myself prefer "La mort: l'anti-drogue."

I was getting a little pissed off. It was one Goddamned thing after another. Fucking file extensions. Proprietary data storage bullshit. Audacity sucks the donkey's dick, too. Right next to the fucking pig pen, slurpity -slurp, just at noon on a sunday, when all the townfolk are on their way back from the churchhouse. You know? I'm going to pat myself on the back, here. Formally, there's no novelty in that. But I usually have very little to say about myself when it comes to computers. But, man, rescuing The Streetsweeper from 16-Color and actually updating it with sound is a feat that I really didn't think was possible. It was a lot of work, dude. After I got the thing into .mov and .avi and the mpeg4 jabbity, I had to work my way through converting sound files to different formats. Audacity kept crapping out on me. You know. Is there anything different that's just as cheap?

. . . there's a link, up there. It says 16-Color.com. You click on that, and you'll see an advertisement for the 16-Color.com. Above the advertisement, you'll see a link for something called TweenMachine. That's not out, yet. . . basically. . . well, I'm expecting a dumbed-down version of Flash.

In other words the days of 16-color are effectively over. Dig?

That's what I used to make The Streetsweeper/La Balayeuse. Now, I've been monkeying around with flash. I've been trying to recreate the. . . the choppy 8-Bit look. . . yeah, we'll call it that. . . on Flash and the results are kind of mixed. . .

But, on the other hand. . . I think it's way easier than 16-Color. There's a really steep learning curve on that engine. . . Flash, I mean. I can work a hell of a lot faster on it, for starters. It's good. The drawing interface allows me to do a hell of a lot more.

The version of Flash I'm using is from 2004. It's Flash MX Version 7. The guy who showed me what's up said something to the effect of "I wish I could give you Version four." What he meant, I think, was that the program had gotten more cluttered. Which is all just to say that the Flash Brand has been pretty stable throughout it's existence. Which, to you, would mean that any old copy of it that you should happen to find laying around will do you. You can also check out some Opensource versions of the program. That might be the way to go, actually.

Anyway, man. . . Even if 16-Color was still around, converting it to a format that anyone could look at is. . . in my experience. . . a pain in the ass.

I was confused by your question, at first. . . Believe it or not, it took me no less than six programs to crack that fucker. There might be a better way, but I haven't seen it, yet.

Thanks for writing!

That was tits, as you used to say. God bless youtube for making it so easy to get these things out there. Seventy people saw a movie that used to be trapped on your computer. I'd love to see some of your flash work...

Hey, thanks for that critique last week. I took everything to heart, and it was really appreciated. I've been swamped lately, but sometime we have to talk about working together. Also, show some of your flash-work...
